Knee replacements

Abstract:
This chapter aims to provide the reader with an overview of cemented total knee replacement (TKR). To understand the various aspects of TKR, such as the indications for surgery, design rationale and outcome, one needs to have a background knowledge of the anatomy and biomechanics of the knee joint. The first two sections are devoted to these aspects and will cover the management of a patient presenting with an arthritic knee. Other treatment modalities are available for the treatment of osteoarthritis and these will be explained in brief. This is followed by a description of the development of TKR before presenting the cemented TKR. © 2008 Woodhead Publishing Limited All rights reserved.
