History of a text: the major manuscripts and critical editions of the Rāmcarit-mānas
- Abstract:
- The Rāmcarit-mānas (1572), the most successful work produced in an Indian vernacular, has had a rich print publishing history over the past two hundred years and was edited again and again by some of the greatest scholars of Hindi. Modern publishing eventually goes back to texts transmitted in handwritten sources. After a survey of the manuscripts that were used for the print editions, the chapter examines the publishing history of the epic with special focus on the mid-twentieth century critical or semi-critical editions. It also looks at evolving scholarly attitudes to methodology of editing texts, the major debates that surrounded the editions, and eventually the role of Mānas-editing in the Indian national movement.
