The need for consensus, consistency, and core outcome sets in perioperative research.
- Abstract:
- Never before has the importance of outcome selection and measurement been more critical. Accurate data, which may be made public, are required for clinical revalidation, and institutional level performance data are tied with government goals to achieve targets and make comparisons between centres. In the research setting, synthesis and meta-analysis of outcome data from well designed and conducted randomised controlled trials (RCTs) have critical influence on health policy and decision-making. It is vital therefore that the outcomes measured in these significant evaluations are carefully selected by the relevant stakeholders and measured in valid and reproducible ways.
