Integración al mercado laboral de los inmigrantes intrarregionales en Chile: análisis de las trayectorias de empleo y de los logros ocupacionales basado en las encuestas de hogares de 2013, 2015 y 2017

Alternative title:
Labor market integration of intraregional immigrants in Chile: analysis of employment trajectories and occupational achievements based on household surveys from 2013, 2015, and 2017
Abstract:
This article analyzes the occupational and labor integration of immigrants in Chile. Using household surveys from 2013, 2015, and 2017, the probability of being active, having a job, and informal employment is compared between immigrants and Chileans. Controlling for sociodemographic variables and time since arrival in Chile, the results indicate that immigrants were not at a disadvantage compared to the native population in terms of activity and unemployment levels in the years analyzed. However, differences are observed in access to higher-skilled occupations, both by country of origin and by gender. Labor informality among Latin American immigrants appears to reduce their access to higher-skilled and higher-quality jobs compared to migrants with formal jobs.

This article analyzes the occupational and labor integration of immigrants in Chile. Household surveys from 2013, 2015 and 2017 are used to compare the probabilities of being active, of being employed and of labor informality for immigrants and Chileans. Controlling for sociodemographic variables and time of arrival in Chile, the results indicate that immigrants were not at a disadvantage compared to the native population in terms of activity and unemployment levels in the years analyzed. However, there are differences in access to higher-skilled occupations, on the basis of both country of origin and gender. Labor informality among Latin American immigrants appears to reduce their access to higher-skilled and better quality jobs compared to migrants with formal jobs.

This article is written on the professional integration and on the march of the work of immigrants in Chili. There are all the differences in the access to more qualified professions, depending on the countries of origin and genre. The informal character of work with Latin American migrants is limited by the access to more qualified and better quality employment than migrants' formalities.
