GEOCHEMICAL SIGNATURE OF SHALES FROM THE WITWATERSRAND SUPERGROUP

Abstract:
Shales are common in the West Rand Group and with few exceptions pose a problem of stratigraphic correlation when encountered in the field or boreholes. Normally correlation is possible only with reference to adjacent marker horizons, when these are available, and occasionally by distinctive magnetic signature. Demonstration that shales are geochemically distinct would be of great potential value in mapping and exploratory drilling. This paper presents preliminary data and conlusions on this aspect of shale chemistry.-from Authors
