2016 National audit of red cell use in adult haematology patients
- Abstract:
- Current data show that patients with haematological malignancies receive 15–20% of the total red blood cells (RBC) transfused annually. The increasing life expectancy and improved treatment and supportive options are changing the demographics of haematology patients receiving transfusions from those that are on chemotherapy to those that require a regular transfusion programme for chronic bone marrow failure, especially myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS).
