Longitudinal data analysis with R: a practical introduction from theory to code

Abstract:
This book provides a practical introduction to longitudinal and panel data analysis for social scientists, bridging econometric theory with hands-on application in R. Organised around a progressive pedagogical model, it develops core concepts—unobserved heterogeneity, within- and between-unit variation, and the logic of comparing units to themselves over time—before applying them to data preparation, exploration, estimation, and diagnostics. Moving from pooled OLS through Fixed Effects and Random Effects models, the book demonstrates how panel methods address confounding that defeats cross-sectional designs, equipping readers to move from describing patterns to making defensible causal claims. Worked exercises and case studies ground each method in real analytical workflows. By synthesising theory and code, the book equips researchers with both the conceptual vocabulary and the technical competence to design, conduct, and critically interpret their own longitudinal research across the social sciences.
