Solid state detectors

Abstract:
Solid state detectors play a fundamental role in particle physics providing precision vertex detection, identification of heavy quarks and leptons, and momentum measurement. The status of the LHC experiments will be reviewed including their performance and the lesson that we have learned from their construction. The development of extremely radiation hard sensors, for the LHC luminosity upgrade will also be discussed. Progress in hybrid, monolithic or semi-monolithic pixel detectors will be presented including the application of monolithic active pixels (MAPS) and DEPFET pixels for RHIC and SuperBelle upgrades. © 2010 Elsevier B.V.
