Book section : Chapter

Auxiliary verbs

Abstract:
The chapter is structured as follows: Section 1 addresses basic issues on the concept of ‘auxiliary verb’. Section 2 deals with the morphology and distribution of auxiliaries. Finally, Section 3 is devoted to intermediate elements that appear between certain auxiliaries and their infinitival complements. These elements, most of which superficially resemble prepositions, constitute the main challenge for a theory of word classes in the phenomena at hand.
