Exploring ‘behaviour as communication’ as a hinge commitment within whole school nurture and restorative practice
- Abstract:
- This thought piece explores the similarities between a whole school approach to nurture and restorative practice, their wider links to relational practice and their underlying hinge commitments to the belief that all behaviour is communication. This position, situated within the concept of care and relationships, has the potential to reinforce a polarised educational discourse, whereby deep disagreement with behaviourist approaches is an ongoing and inevitable outcome. However, this is not the intention of this article and despite deep disagreement, common ground in existing diverse networks is proposed as a tool to facilitate rational persuasion, giving hope to the powerful opportunity of scaled up aligned practices, all of which have the potential for positive change within education.
