ACCE 2024: The Academy of Conservation and Care for the Environment: Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast

Abstract:
The Academy of Conservation and Care for the Environment (ACCE) is a transdisciplinary capacity building programme for the integrated management of culture heritage and the natural environment. It uses high- profile heritage sites and cultural landscapes as 'living labs' for building cross- sector knowledge and skills. It is the pedagogic arm of the Sites at the Intersection of Natural and Cultural Heritage (SXNCH) network. SXNCH was co- founded by a group of researchers at the University of Oxford, the University of Bamberg, and the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft in 2020. The network has benefited from discussion and exchange with a diverse set of global partners, especially during the symposia held in 2020 and 2023. An incomplete list of these organisations can be found in the end matter. We are especially grateful to our ongoing partnership with several organisations based in Jordan, in particular the Petra Development and Tourism Regional Authority (PDTRA) and Sela, with whom we co- developed the initial framework for ACCE. The inaugural ACCE took place in Italy over 2 weeks in October 2024. As well as our Jordanian partners, it benefited further from the involvement of the Pompeii Archaeological Park, the World Monuments Fund, Hiking the Amalfi Coast, and Forty Five Degrees. The academy was made possible due to the generous support of the Alan and Linde Katritzky Foundation.
