An assessment of the possibilities of oil palm cultivation in Western Division, The Gambia
- Alternative title:
- Land resource study no.6
- Abstract:
-
The climate, geology, relief, vegetation and soils of the Western Division 01 The Gambia are described. Most of the environmental factors are unfavourable for optimum oil palm growth, in particular the low rainfall and long dry season of seven months. The unfavourable conditions are reflected in the poor establishment and growth of planted palms. High establishment costs and low yields suggest that the profitability of oil palm development in The Gambia is very doubtful, but such development may be desirable for social or other reasons. If so, development should be on the least unsuitable sites for oil palm growth, which have been selected, and mapped, principally on the basis of soil and soil moisture characteristics interpreted in terms of the growth of wild palms.
