Abstract:

INTRODUCTION

There is no documentary evidence to illustrate the beginnings and early growth of the collection of manuscripts made by Archbishop Laud. From 1633, the year in which he became Archbishop of Canterbury, to 1641, when he was committed to the Tower of London, we are able to follow the growth of the collection by means of the year dates entered in the great majority of the manuscripts. In addition, from 1636 to 1641 we have summary household accounts which contain references to the purchase of manuscripts, though, as we shall see, it is very difficult to link these entries with existing volumes. A few volumes contain inscriptions of gift, and a rather larger number contain the names of owners immediately preceding Laud. We can, further, put together some groups of manuscripts which must have been imported from France, Germany, Italy, the Levant and from farther East. The material is rather intractable, and it will be best to adopt a chronological scheme...
