Alternative title:
Building the path to enlightenment: Tibetan adaptations of the Jataka Tale
Abstract:
[Jataka and apadāna stories constitute a major part of Buddhist narrative literature. While most Jataka tales follow relatively stable narrative templates, they are also allowed to vary. Jataka tales have been told in different languages and literary forms , and have been preserved from simple prose narratives to complex poetic or visual expressions. This paper focuses on the Tibetan adaptation of the Jataka genre. The paper first provides an overview of Jataka tales translated from Sanskrit or Chinese into Tibetan and incorporated into Tibetan Buddhist scriptures. Then, a specific Jataka series from the Kadampa school of Tibetan Buddhism is examined. The frame stories within this series are particularly interesting, as they represent perhaps the most creative aspect of Tibetan narrators' work. In these Kadampa Jataka tales, the narrative frame is transferred from India to Tibet, and the main characters are newly converted Tibetan Buddhists and their Indian teachers. This highly original adaptation of the Jataka genre demonstrates the important role narrative literature played in the Tibetan acceptance and adaptation of Buddhism.]
