Material religion in Byzantium and beyond
- Abstract:
- The introduction to this volume offers a concise overview of Material Religion, a rapidly growing field within religious studies, and highlights its value as a framework for examining religious life in Byzantium. The authors argue that prioritizing the materiality of the byzantine world as a starting point for studying religion significantly broadens the scope of enquiry. This approach not only encourages a redefinition of what constitutes religion in Byzantium but also invites deeper engagement with a wider range of evidence. Furthermore, familiarity with the theoretical language and concepts of contemporary Material Religion scholarship facilitates more meaningful dialogue with scholars working on other regions and historical periods. The introduction also situates Material Religion within related areas of Byzantine Studies, particularly research on embodiment, sensory experience and materiality, underscoring how these interconnected fields enrich our understanding of byzantine religious practices.
