Regulation and reporting the price of oil
- Abstract:
- The European Commission published a proposal for the regulation of benchmarks, including benchmarks used in oil pricing, on 18 September 2013. Unfortunately, the proposal fails to understand the nature of oil trading and threatens the industry’s ability to provide affordable and reliable supply to Europe. The professional reporting of oil prices requires a deep understanding of markets, especially as the market for crude and petroleum products is vast and complex. Any attempt to regulate benchmarks in these complex markets requires a similar level of understanding. Without it, regulation jeopardizes the effi cient trading of oil.
