Abstract:
About this transcription
Title: Cronicl o Wech Oesoedd
Date: c.1552
Author: Elis Gruffydd

Availability: The chronicle is held in the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth. It consists of two parts split into four total volumes. The first part is shelved under NLW MS 5276iD and NLW MS 5276iiD and the second under NLW MS 3054iD and NLW MS 3054iiD. Both volumes have been digitised and can be found at: https://www.library.wales/discover-learn/digital-exhibitions/manuscripts/early-modernperiod/elis-gruffudds-chronicle (date accessed: 21/05/2026). This transcription is of fols.76r-93r in NLW 5276iD and fols.426r-427v; 429r-432r in NLW 5276iiD. These sections concern the origins of the Britons and have been transcribed as part of the research for my MPhil dissertation entitled "The Vision of Ancient and Contemporary Britain in Elis Gruffydd’s Cronicl o Wech Oesoedd".

Editorial principles This is a diplomatic transcription of the original text. Capital letters and punctuation are as in the original. Superscript letters and words as well as letters which have been crossed out have been preserved. Word and paragraph boundaries and spelling errors also appear as in the original. A footnote will be added where part of a page is missing. Genealogical diagrams and marginalia have not been transcribed here but will be described in a footnote where they appear in the text.
