Gender, childhood(s) and (im)mobilities
- Abstract:
- Studies on childhood (im)mobilities have not always incorporated a critical and/or intersectional lens in their theoretical underpinnings, explorations and/or methodological inquiry. In many cases, studies limit understandings of mobility to so-called ‘able-bodied’ corporeal notions and an age-centric developmental conceptualization of the child. Informed by interdisciplinary scholarship on childhood(s), mobilities, gender studies, disability and ableism studies, this chapter suggests a shift in our readings of childhood (im)mobilities. Drawing from our ongoing work, we argue for an exploration of childhood (im)mobility practices as interdependent relationalities differentially embedded and embodied in aged, gendered, racialized and dis(abled) socio-material processes. In arguing to incorporate critical theoretical conceptions and methodologies to achieve grounded understandings of childhood (im)mobilities, we start leaning into more possibilities including (micro)practices that are affective, interdependent, tactical and relational and involve (im)mobilities beyond the body of the mobile child.
