ORA data model 1.0

Documentation:
The ORA (Oxford University Research Archive) Data Model has been under construction for several years, developing from an initial 'lite' implementation of a Sufia/Fedora instance for the deposit of research theses and data into the ORA institutional repository. The model is presented in an MS Excel workbook, so it can be owned and maintained by non-technical staff. The Data Model is intended to describe data that is expressed in many different ways, including XML, linked data, and JSON. By providing a common terminology for the base set of fields, the model aims to allow for a single common platform for services that have previously (for ORA) been disparate. The model also uses documentation and convention to define authority schemes and URIs, instead of including these within the data model itself. This avoids a great deal of technical complexity, allowing the Data Model to be easily understandable (and editable) by both technical and non-technical repository staff. The model is currently being implemented within ORA's Hyrax, Blacklight, and Fedora installations, and also in the development of its SWORD2 and OAI-PMH APIs for interaction with the University of Oxford's installation of Symplectic Elements (in conjunction with Symplectic Ltd.). While this document represents a stable 'Version 1' of the Data Model, while active development is ongoing, further revisions to the model are expected. As a result we have chosen at this point not to register a DOI (Digital Object Identifier) for this dataset record. ORA (Oxford University Research Archive) is the University of Oxford's instiutional respository. ORA holds a large number of diverse research-related objects and their metadata, such as journal articles, patents, monographs, and technical reports. The ORA Data Model is a formal definition of the descriptive and administrative metadata of objects in the ORA system. It describes the metadata's structure, naming conventions, authority schemes, and basic validation criteria. The Data Model applies to metadata managed within many different internal systems. Within ORA, it applies to ORA's own Hyrax, Fedora, Solr and Blacklight systems. It is also the basis of ORA's SWORD2 and OAI-PMH API services, which interact with other providers and consumers of the repository's metadata (e.g. Symplectic Limited via the University of Oxford's implementation of Symplectic Elements). It is therefore technology and implementation agnostic. While it contains some fields that are specific to the University of Oxford, we hope that the majority of the Data Model will be relevant to similar repositories and institutions. We welcome feedback on the data model. We also intend to share information regarding our implementation of the model across our chosen platforms as these sets of work are completed. Correspondence address for questions or comments on the model should be sent to: [email protected]
