A lightweight self-sensing flexible structure similar to three-bar tensegrity with superelastic SMA wires
- Abstract:
- Inspired by the skeletal, muscular and nervous system, a structure similar to tensegrity with load-bearing and force/displacement monitoring capabilities is proposed. A key feature of this structure is the use of superelastic Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) wires to replace the conventional strings. Moreover, this structure introduces three exterior leveling strings innovatively compared to classical tensegrity. The main advantage of this system is that it can provide precise monitoring while bearing loads. This is achieved by self-perceptive performance of the superelastic SMA wires, from which the spatial coordinates of the nodes and model deformation forces subjected to stress can be accurately determined. The research findings redefine potential applications for lightweight structures and introduce novel materials, broadening the horizons for future exploration in lightweight self-sensing structures development. The proposed lightweight sensing structure in this study can be utilized in the field of precision mechanics, enabling applications that high accuracy and predictability.
