Reimprosa und Codeswitching. Zur Rhetorik mittelniederdeutscher Andachtstexte
- Abstract:
- The paper examines Middle Low German devotional texts through an analysis of their rhetorical and linguistic arrangement. The basis for these are a number of current projects editing manuscripts from Northern German convents, in particular the letters books compiled by the Benedictine nuns of Lüne and the prayer books written in the Cistercian Abbey of Medingen. My hypothesis is that devotional texts from the region creatively employ a wide range of textual strategies, prominent among them rhyming prose and code switching between Latin and Middle Low German. The two examples discussed in detail play with the bridal imagery of the wedding feast of the lamb. Crossing traditional genres of prayer, dialogue, letter, hymns, and meditation, they produce a language of intimacy which develops a direct communication between the devotee and Christ, creating a distinct bilingual textual community in Northern German religious houses, and reaching out into lay piety.
