Dredged rocks from Hatton Bank, Rockall Plateau

Abstract:
Three dredge hauls were obtained in I973 by R/V Vema from the northern slopes of Hatton Bank. The most common rock types in each haul are arkosic and subarkosic arenite. The arkosic arenite is associated with other sedimentary rocks which include fossiliferous oolitic limestones. The age range of the limestones inferred from palynology is Cretaceous-Palaeogene. We argue that these rocks are of local origin and that they were formed near the margin of a shallow-water basin during the early separation of Rockall Plateau and Greenland.
