Travel, drawing and the imagination in Renaissance Italy: the artist, the amateur and the armchair traveller

Abstract:
In their travels, artists and non-professionals ('amateurs') used drawing as a tool for observation, recollection and commemoration; for the ‘armchair traveller’ drawings acted as portals to a new world of recognizable or distant places; representations of drawings could also open up journeys of understanding. This paper examines different aspects of the autonomous drawing in the late 15th and 16th centuries, particularly drawing after the antique and the place of drawing in humanist culture in Italy.
