Anglican primary schools in the London diocese

Abstract:
This research study, undertaken in 1989, examines the views of the headteachers and chairs of governors of 100 Church of England primary schools in the Diocese of London. Commissioned by its board of education, the purpose of the research was to provide objective information about the roles and performances of its schools so that the Board could further meet the individual needs of schools and also to strengthen the overall position of church schools in social policy negotiations. A four page synopsis of the survey findings are presented followed by more detailed discussions of the views expressed by the head teachers and chairs of governors. It also examines issues relating to the other governors, class teachers, pupils, parents, admissions policies, the school curriculum, values, collective worship, and the relationship between the school and the church. Two groups of schools are identified, compared and discussed: those in more favoured areas, and those in more disadvantaged ones.
