BER performance of NRZ-OOK and Manchester modulation in indoor wireless infrared links

Abstract:
This paper describes a novel approach to the evaluation of the bit error rate (BER) performance of optical wireless links that takes into account shot noise, fluorescent light interference, and intersymbol interference (ISI) from both multipath dispersion and high-pass filtering (HPF) at the receiver. The calculation of the BER is achieved with the use of an efficient numerical technique based on nonclassical Gauss Quadrature Rules. Fluorescent light interference is modeled as a Fourier series expansion with coefficients taken from measurements, while multipath-induced ISI is calculated by using previously reported IR channel models. Application of the technique presented here allows for the calculation of the optimum HPF cutoff frequency that minimizes the overall performance penalty. Finally, as an application of this method, the BER performance of NRZ-OOK and Manchester (2-PPM) modulation is evaluated and numerical results are presented for difference link scenarios.
