Cosmic ray acceleration

Abstract:: This review describes the basic theory of cosmic ray acceleration by shocks including the plasma instabilities confining cosmic rays near the shock, the effect of the magnetic field orientation, the maximum cosmic ray energy and the shape of the cosmic ray spectrum. Attention is directed mainly towards Galactic cosmic rays accelerated by supernova remnants. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
