The Civil Wars in 100 objects

Abstract:
The Civil Wars which took place between 1639 and 1652, and their aftermath, were the mot destabilizing conflicts the British and Irish peoples have ever endured. During these times everyday people experienced dizzying mix of impoverishment, bereavement and suffering, alongside political excitement, religious experimentation, tumbling hierarchies and new opportunities: many came to feel that they were removed from normality, and living in a topsy-turvy, upside-down world. In this book, leading experts use 100 objects to explore the people, events and places that illuminate the causes, conduct, aftermath and legacy of the civil wars. From propaganda pamphlets to household goods, through the personal possessions and weapons of the famous, to the architecture that defined religious and military change, these objects offer an intimate connection with the past, and new light on these tumultuous times.
