ELECTROMAGNETIC DECAY OF N-17

Abstract:
The radiative decay properties of the first 16 bound states in 17N with Ex < 5.8 MeV have been studied using the 11B(7Li, pγ)17N reaction at E = 6 MeV. Proton-gamma coincidence data were taken with an annular particle detector located at 180° and a Ge(Li) detector placed at θγ = 3°, 45° and 90°. Angular distributions, branching ratios and Doppler shifts were measured. The resulting energies (keV), lifetimes (fs) and spin-parity assignments (those in brackets are probable assignments) were: (1374, 93±35, 3 2-), (1850, > 1 ps, 1 2+), (1907, > 1 ps, ( 5 2-)), (2526, > 1 ps, ( 5 2+)), (3129, 275±80, ( 7 2-)), (3203, < 30, ( 3 2-)), (3629, > 1 ps, ( 9 2-)), (3663, < 350), (3906, 52±22, ( 7 2-)), (4006, < 15, ( 3 2+)), (4208,< 70), (4415, < 60),(5170, < 60), (5195,< 95), (5514, < 100, ( 3 2-)), (5770, < 120). The properties of these levels are interpreted in terms of a weak coupling model in which a p 1 2 proton hole is coupled to levels in 18O or two proton holes are coupled to the K = 1 2+ g.s. band in 19F. A shell model calculation which includes 2p-1h negative parity states and 3p-2h positive parity states is also shown to provide a reasonable description of the bound states of 17N. © 1974.
