Voix de femmes et voix d’hommes dans les fabliaux

Abstract:
This article offers a linguistic analysis of speech and thought presentation in the fabliaux, complemented by a study of narrative frames. When examining the number of references to male and female characters and their first mentions in the narratives, one notes a clear male prominence, which effectively presents fabliaux as a men’s world (whatever their narrative role is). In addition, a look at the lexical items relating to deception and at narrative remarks in prologues and epilogues shows that narrators tend to comment on women to men. Finally, our analysis of reported discourse reveals that it is the roles played by the characters (not their gender) that influence the frequency and length of their speech (less so for their thoughts). If gender does not seem to be the primary factor impacting voice presentation in the fabliaux, it does influence how the narratives are framed and thus how discourses – and women – might be perceived.
