BACKGROUND: Polymorphisms in 11-β hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11β-HSD1, encoded by HSD11B1) have been reported to be associated with obesity-related cardiovascular risk factors, such as type II diabetes and hypertension. Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular death associated with these factors but has significant additional heritability, the cause of which is undetermined.
