Identifying malaria hot-spots

Abstract:
Where effective control measures (drugs, insecticide treated nets, and in some areas insecticides) are being deployed, malaria is coming down. The map is changing. Thirty years ago most of sub-Saharan Africa had high malaria transmission during the rainy season or throughout the year, but in increasing areas transmission has fallen markedly. The epidemiology of malaria in parts of Africa now is beginning to resemble that described traditionally in the Americas and much of Asia. In these generally low seasonal transmission areas there are small foci of more intense transmission which sustain malaria. These small foci or “hot spots” are a major impediment to malaria elimination so their identification is important as countries augment their malaria elimination activities. But how should we identify malaria hot spots in low transmission settings?
