Rigveda root-accented neuters in -ana- and animate forms in -ana- /-anī-

Abstract:
Jared Klein's publications have highlighted the importance of thorough synchronic analysis of RV material. This paper in his honour attempts to provide a detailed synchronic account, and draw conclusions from it about diachronic developments during a limited chronological period of early Old Indo-Aryan. As a result, the traditional view of aninherited tripartite class of Indo-Iranian neuters in -ana- is challenged, and evidence is presented to show that the distinct semantic types could have evolved out of a single category of neuter verbal nouns. In particular, it suggests that the ways in which animate stems in -ana- /-anī- grew into an extensive class can be traced in the earliest Vedic texts.
