Metallic oxygen.

Abstract:
Oxygen, as the breath and carrier of life, is an isolated molecule under familliar conditions. As a condensed-phase fluid at 1.2 million atmospheres of pressure, it is a carrier of electric current: metallic oxygen. The metallisation of oxygen forces us to reconsider the very basis of our classification of the elements as metals or nonmetals. At three million atmospheres, the periodic table shows only a handful of elements which can be considered nonmetallic.
