Synthesis of new [1(4)]metallocenophanes

Abstract:
Vilsmeier formylation of the trimetallic species {(C5Me4H)Fe(C5Me4)CH 2C5H4}2Fe (1) gives {(C5Me4CHO)Fe(C5Me4)CH 2C5H4}2Fe (2) and a triformylated product 3, the structure of which has been established by a 1H:1H NOESY experiment. 2 can be converted, by three additional steps, to the new [14]ferrocenophane, (C5H4CH2C5Me4) 4Fe4 (8), in which ferrocene and permethylated ferrocene units alternate. The methodology also permits the synthesis of heteronuclear species comprising two permethylated ferrocenylene units, a ferrocenylene unit, and a heterometallocenylene; thus, {(C5H4CH2C5Me4) 4Fe3Co}+PF6 - (10) has been characterized.
