"Hood ornament" or "V-10 engine"? Myths and realities regarding physician-scientists in academic radiation oncology departments.
- Abstract:
- Physician-scientists can contribute substantially and in unique ways to the success of academic departments. The training, selection, nurturing, and support of physician-scientists is of critical importance to maximize the chance of success. A successful physician-scientist contributes economically and intellectually and provides flexibility to an academic department, as well as educational and career developmental opportunities for medical students, residents, and fellows. Successful physician-scientists in academic departments can be much more than mere "ornaments" - they can potentially be the "vehicles to excellence".
