The Araucarias are gymnosperms, a group of flowering plants in which the seeds are not enclosed in an ovary and often described as 'naked' seeds. They belong to the plant family Araucariaceae in the order Coniferales. This family consists of conifers which are not botanically considered as Pines although they are called Pines. Araucariaceae consists of members which may be either monoecious (i.e. having the male and female flowers on different parts of the same plant) or dioecious (i.e. having the male flower on one plant and the female on another plant of the same species).
