Chemical evidence for the recycling of Roman gold in the Kushan Empire
- Abstract:
- This chapter compares the results of laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) on 159 Roman aurei and 37 Kushan gold coins held at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. Existing LA-ICP-MS analyses have shown that Kushan gold coins from the first and second centuries had platinum concentrations far in excess of contemporary Roman issues. As such, it is impossible for Rome to have been the exclusive source of Kushan gold—and this conclusion is further reinforced here. This chapter further investigates the role of recycling Roman gold coinage as a source for Kushan gold under Huvishka and his successors.
