Social network analysis workshop: a practical introduction from theory to code

Abstract:
This book provides a comprehensive introduction to network analysis for social scientists, bridging foundational theory with practical application in R. Organised around a two-stage pedagogical model, it develops core concepts—graph-theoretic foundations, network measures, and structural principles—before applying these to analysis of real-world data, visualisation, and statistical modelling. Drawing on published research, the book demonstrates network methods across diverse domains: epidemic transmission, viral propagation on social media, and organisational crime structures. By synthesising theory and application, the book equips researchers with both the conceptual vocabulary and technical competence to design, conduct, and interpret their own network-analytic research, whilst building intuition for network thinking across social science domains.
