Deep learning in religious education
- Abstract:
- Deep learning is an ongoing debate in religious education since the fundamental aim of the subject, whether as religious or devotional nurture, or the academic study of different religions (and non-religions) is at stake. This chapter sets out to review these perspectives by comparing three different views on what constitutes effective learning in RE: cognitive, existential and spiritual. First different cognitive approaches are considered, including the importance of disciplinarity. Then more existential approaches are reviewed, typically from Scandinavia. Lastly, spiritual depth is considered, and the different pedagogical strategies involved. These are all reviewed against Goldman’s (2023) core constructs, showing how they apply well for the cognitive elements but not so well across the other two approaches. Thus, extending Goldman’s framework, this chapter attends to the significance, and challenges, of existential and spiritual pursuits in what deep learning may mean in religiosu education.
