An aerosol assimilation system based on SPRINTARS and LETKF

Abstract:
Preliminary results for a global aerosol assimilation system are reported. The system is based on the global aerosol transport model SPRINTARS and a local ensemble transform Kalman filter. Experiments with both simulated observations and real observations (from AERONET) are discussed. We show that even sparse observing networks on the ground can improve global aerosol modeling. The low recurrence of polar-orbiting satellites, however, poses a challenge for assimilating aerosol with the current system. © 2009 American Institute of Physics.
