The rediscovery in 2008 of 'The Selden Map of China' at the Bodleian Library, University of Oxford, UK, has greatly expanded knowledge of early seventeenth- century sea trade in East Asia. The map, painted with carbon ink and water colors on Chinese paper, is a unique example of Chinese merchant cartography, depicting a network of shipping routes, starting from the port of Quanzhou, Fujian province, and reaching Japan and Indonesia.
