Saving lives, improving mothers’ care: lessons learned to inform maternity care from the UK and Ireland confidential enquiries into maternal deaths and morbidity 2022-24

This report, the thirteenth MBRRACE-UK annual report of the Confidential Enquiry into Maternal Deaths and Morbidity, includes surveillance data on 598 women who died during or up to one year after pregnancy between 2022 and 2024 in the UK. In addition, it also includes confidential enquiries into the care of women who died between 2022 and 2024 in the UK and Ireland from haemorrhage, amniotic fluid embolism (AFE), infection, general medical and surgical disorders and neurological conditions.

The report also includes lessons for critical care, anaesthesia and pathology as well as a morbidity confidential enquiry into women requiring networked maternity care. The women reviewed for the morbidity enquiry were selected from a UK Obstetric Surveillance System (UKOSS) study on the use of biological agents in pregnancy conducted from May 2022 to October 2024. Stratified sampling included women spread across the UK nations with varied representation by age and ethnic group. The records of 33 women were received and reviewed. The lessons for the care of these women are included alongside those who died from general medical and surgical disorders.
