Three Dadanitic inscriptions from al-ʿUḏayb (oasis of al-ʿUlā) and the occurrence of the word s1ṭ

Abstract:: The purpose of this paper is to study three Dadanitic inscriptions from the area of al-ʿUḏayb, north-west of the oasis of al-ʿUlā. Two of these have been published previously, AH 111 and U 63, and one is as yet unpublished, U unp. 75. This hitherto unpublished inscription reveals new grammatical features not found before in any other Dadanitic text: the personal name {Ẓ}nfs1s1 and the preposition ʿn in ablative. But the most common characteristic of these three texts in opposition to all other Dadanitic inscriptions is the occurrence of the word s1ṭ. The formulaic sequences in which it occurs are quite striking: AH 111/3-4: s1ṭ s1ṭ ḏʿmn; U 63/2-3: w s1ṭ ḏʿmn; and U unp. 75/1-2: w s1ṭ-h s1ṭ ʿnʿḏrʾl. This word can be interpreted on one hand as a substantive meaning “officer”, and on the other hand as a verb from the same root with the sense of “to command”, depending on its etymology and the grammatical context of the texts. It should be noted that its interpretation as “officer” appears only in connection with the place name Ḏʿmn.
