Transmission and diffusion of syntactic change

Abstract:
Successful syntactic change involves both the innovation of a new grammatical option (actuation) and its spread through the language and the linguistic community (diffusion). A new variant may appear earlier in certain linguistics environments, among certain speakers, or in a certain geographic location, and spread later to other environments, speakers, or locations. This chapter examines the regularities behind diffusion in all its dimensions, considering some of the reasons that have been proposed for the parallels found repeatedly across many instances of syntactic change.
