ATMOSPHERIC DEGRADATION OF YBA2CU3O7 - A STUDY BY INFRARED REFLECTANCE, RAMAN-SCATTERING, AND X-RAY PHOTOELECTRON-SPECTROSCOPY
- Abstract:
- Infrared reflectance spectroscopy, Raman scattering, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy have been used to study the atmospheric degradation of YBa2Cu3O7-δ. The degradation reaction: 2YBa2Cu3O7 + 3CO2 → Y2BaCuO5 + 5CuO + 3BaCO3 + 0.502 is strongly catalyzed by water vapor, and carbonate species build up in a matter of hours on an IR depth scale at room temperature in water vapor saturated air. The reaction is rapid even for reduced samples (x = 1.0) containing no Cu(III). © 1989.
