NUCLEAR MICROBEAM ANALYSIS OF WEAR PARTICLES IN TISSUE SURROUNDING FAILED HIP-JOINT IMPLANTS

Abstract:

Particulate wear debris from hip joint replacements is an important factor in determining the response of the surrounding tissue to the implants. Failed replacement joints are surrounded by a layer of fibrous tissue showing an inflammatory response to the wear debris. This reaction leads to bone resorption and the eventual failure of the prosthesis.
