Melanopsin-expressing photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (pRGCs) represent a third class of retinal photoreceptor. These cells are intrinsically photosensitive, but also receive inputs from rod and cone photoreceptors, acting as the primary sensory conduit mediating non-image-forming responses to light.
