A Simple Kinematic Source of Skewness in Atmospheric Flow Fields

Abstract:

Geopotential height fields exhibit a well-known pattern of skewness, with distributions that are positively skewed on the poleward side of themidlatitude jets/storm tracks and negatively skewed on the equatorward side.
