Nematic Liquid Crystals: From Maier-Saupe to a Continuum Theory

We define a continuum energy functional that effectively interpolates between the mean-field Maier-Saupe energy and the continuum Landau-de Gennes energy functional and can describe both spatially homogeneous and inhomogeneous systems.
