One step further toward defining the optimal respiratory care package for neonates: Interventions to successfully extubate preterm infants

Abstract:
In 2010, 14.9 million infants worldwide were born premature (less than 37 weeks’ gestation), representing 11% of all newborns. Despite many advances made during the past 3 decades in the field of neonatal medicine, preterm birth still presents the second largest cause of death in children younger than 5 years of age. Thus, improving the outcomes of preterm infants through the development of refined physiological support systems has been strongly advocated as a part of the United Nations pivotal Millennium Development Goals for child survival.
